deosend has been offering, producing, and supplying biodegradable plant sleeves since 2022.
The plant sleeve decomposes in the forest from the outside in and from the bottom up. The outer paper/cellulose dissolves after about 4 years due to the moisture in the soil area (e.g., grass, nettles, or blackberries), and the remaining inner cotton softens and sinks down a bit. This process repeats itself over the years until only cotton remains around the trunk in a ring shape. The cotton ring absorbs rainwater, stores it, and releases it to the trunk over time until the cotton has rotted away. The growth sleeve has various functions throughout its life cycle and is never without a use in the forest.
The growth sleeve:
protects the plant against browsing,
absorbs rain and releases it to the plant for growth, as a shell when erected and as a ‘ring’ when rotting,
provides shade in hot/dry conditions,
ensures light for plant growth through the holes around the circumference, and is a
composite material made of paper and cotton blend fabric.
